Does STYLE Matter?
by Alysyn CurdIn these times of economic upheaval, joblessness and uncertainty, does “style” even mean anything at all? For the members of Detroit’s Independent Retailers’ Association (IRA), the answer is an unequivocal, “Yes.” The reason for this answer goes beyond wanting customers to buy wares from their individual specialty boutiques and other stores. The reason is because IRA members are united in their knowledge that, “style” is a vital function of living. This is where the term “lifestyle” becomes relevant. IRA retailers don’t just sell goods and services, their businesses play a vital role in the lifestyles of the customers and communities they serve.
The ability to dress and dine well, educate your children, travel and generally enjoy life, raises your confidence. Independent businesses like those of IRA, are built on personal relationships and driven in their mission to serve and provide excellent experiences for their customers. Independent businesses stay in direct touch with the lives of those they serve. Independent businesses build confidence, not only by making customers feel good through personal service, but also by providing living proof that anyone can create an independent lifestyle through a thriving business. In Detroit, IRA builds confidence.
Confident people are better positioned to support others, give back and maintain a higher standard for their community. Confident people are better able to tap into their individual creativity and generate opportunities for others beyond themselves. Confident people emanate hope and faith. Confident people ‘find a way to make a way.’
Born of confidence, true style is a reflection not merely of outer taste in fashion, but, more so, of inner vision and the ability to spread positive influence. IRA celebrates the visionary style of positive influence. In these times of economic upheaval, joblessness and uncertainty, the world needs self-confident, “self-styled,” visionaries. In these times of economic upheaval, joblessness and uncertainty, IRA says, “Yes, style does matter.”
In celebration and support of the idea that style is always relevant, the Independent Retailers’ Association is hosting the, “Secrets of Style,” at Arturos Jazz Bar and Restaurant in Southfield (25333 West 12 Mile Road), on Thursday, April 9, 2009.
The event is designed to allow Detroit-area retailers, their customers and the area’s social set to mix, mingle and become acquainted with IRA. Over 300 guests are expected. Dining patrons with invitations, or who R.S.V.P. ahead, may join the party after dinner. Secrets of Style party guests are welcome to food from Arturos’s bar menu.
Doors open to invitation-only guests at 8:00 p.m. The Secrets of Style is held in conjunction with The Michigan Chronicle.
